The Court of Criminal Appeals is Texas' highest court for criminal cases. The Court consists of a Presiding Judge and eight Judges. They are elected by the voters of the entire state, and they hold their offices for terms of six years.

The Court sits in Austin - near the Capitol. From time to time it may sit in other cities to hear cases.

  • New  Effective immediately, the Texas Rules of Appellate Procedure, Rule 31.4(b)&(c), Stay of Mandate and Appendix: Certification of Defendant's Right of Appeal, is amended.

    See MISC DOCKET 11-006 This rule supersedes Misc Docket 11-005. The language (if not represented by counsel) has been removed from the Certification of Defendant's Right of Appeal form . All other amendments made in Misc Docket 11-005 remain in effect.

  • New  Press Release: Texas Court of Criminal Appeals Receives DOJ Capital Case Litigation Grant
  • New  Effective September 1, 2011, all Petitions for Discretionary Review and all copies of the petition must be filed with the Clerk of the Court of Criminal Appeals. See TRAP Rule 68.3.

    Effective September 1, 2011, the opposing party has 15 days in which to file a reply to the petition with the Clerk of the Court of Criminal Appeals. See TRAP Rule 68.9.

    Effective September 1, 2011, the "Writ of Habeas Corpus Application Art. 11.07 form has been revised. The revised form can be found on the "Forms" link.

  • New  Effective June 30, 2011, the Procedures in Death Penalty Cases involving request for Stay of Execution and related filings in Texas State and Trial Courts and the Court of Criminal Appeals has been revised.
